Welcome to our Leadership Spotlight series, where we dive into the current and future implications of value-based care with experts at CVS Accountable Care. Today we feature Khue Nguyen, PharmD, SVP of Strategy for CVS Accountable Care. Join us as we discuss the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) path to 2030, uncover how CVS Accountable Care is navigating regulatory changes and share the secrets to achieving sustainable success in value-based care.

  • How is CVS Accountable Care leading the way to help transition all Medicare Fee-For-Service beneficiaries to an accountable care plan by 2030?

We are very aligned with the CMS goal to align all Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries in accountable care relationships by 2030. It is our mission to support every provider across the country to succeed in value-based care. We do that by enabling providers to gain access to the best program models available to them and providing the support they need to be successful in managing their population. We help fill in the white space, where needed, with our flexible service model.

  • How is CVS Accountable Care helping to shape and adapt to regulatory changes?

CVS Accountable Care is one of the largest Medicare fee-for-service ACOs in the country, and that gives us tremendous strength. We are engaging with CMMI leadership on a regular basis to give feedback about what's working, what's not working, and through these dialogues, we're also able to get a good sense of how CMMI is thinking about the future. Our job is to read the tea leaves, understand the policies that are emerging, and prepare ourselves and our provider partners for coming changes.

  • What factors do you feel support sustainable success in value-based care?

There are many factors that are important for sustainable success. We believe in supporting primary care investments and creating opportunities for specialists and primary care to collaborate, the availability of multi-disciplinary team-based care to provide the wrap around support our providers need to manage a population, having access to analytics and timely insights, as well as market trends to focus on the right areas and evolve for the future, and being able to do this work with access to the best payment models and value-based contracts with private payers.

These are the levers that we believe are important, and the areas that we would advise providers to incorporate into their value-based strategy. We are here as a partner, to support providers in their long-term journey in the evolving health care landscape.

  • How is CVS Accountable Care uniquely positioned to support providers to be successful in value-based care?

CVS Accountable Care is unique as an accountable care organization due to our tremendous scale. That scale allows us the opportunity to continue to invest in innovations and technology, and to refine our core infrastructure to be a stable partner for our providers for their long-term journey in value-based care.

We believe that to do this work, we have to be an equal partner to our providers. That means we’re working hand-in-hand through our clinical program implementation, accurate clinical documentation engagement, and leveraging our comprehensive actuarial and analytic services to guide the business.

We bring a full wraparound administrative infrastructure including strategy, marketing & communications, and compliance to provide administrative relief for our providers. We also have the unique ability to leverage the assets of CVS Health, whenever and wherever needed, to support things like same-day access and capacity needs.
